This informative, setting will teach you the WHY’S to Balayage and Root Shadow. Learn the difference and importance of choosing the proper tools to create the perfect balayage. Hair painting free hand and foil painting, when to choose one technique over the other and which bleach to use for the application of choice. No teasing needed as I will help you understand the importance of light and dark, remember, without depth you cannot create dimension or balance within the hair. Root shadowing is a fantastic technique that gives hair both depth and additional color intrigue, to soften the blonde closest to the scalp area to create the look of a soft sexy blonde. The transition from one formula to the next to create the continuous look from a darker to lighter shade down the strand of the hair without noticing the color transition. Understand the critical differences between shadow root with a demi acid hair color and a demi alkaline hair color - the visual difference is unbelievable. We will conclude with understanding the lines of design which will help you see when to place lightness or darkness on a particular line, rather it be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal and understanding the visual difference.

I will guide you to a successful bleach application and retouch. We will first begin with pinpointing the correct viscosity of a bleach, the choice of bowl and brush versus bottle, sectioning, and the correct timing. This will remove the fear of breaking the hair when using bleach.
4 Simple steps to bleach hair: TSWC (The Sun Will Come)
- Tool: Bowl and brush or Bottle? What kind of bleach should you be using? What if a client has a sensitive scalp?
- Section & Saturate Separate the head into 4 quadrants and make each section thin as tissue paper. Do not overlap to previous lifting but saturate the retouch area properly. When you have finished applying, go back through your sections and apply again.
- Wait: Let the hair process up to the desired level. This can take time, so being patient is key. What are the 7 stages of lift? What colors do we see through these stages?
- Cleanse: Rinse the hair, washing up to 3 times. You don’t want the guest to have an irritation and if there is any leftover bleach it can disrupt your toner.
Safe, confident, risk-free bleaching if you follow the proper guidelines and choose the right tools.

A client relies on you to know what would best fit all of their features and in this class, Sherry will be talking about skin tone, eye color, personality, existing hair color, color tones, underlying pigment in the skin, verbiage, reading personality, body language and even the initial handshake.
The perfect client consultation include:
- Physical features: texture, skin tone, eye color, natural level, desired level
- Emotional factors: day to day life, exercise habits, how often they wash, style and blowdry
- Photo for inspiration
The way to get your client to say yes to your execution:
- Being confident in your ability as a stylist to understand what you are doing. Knowing the proper fundamentals of haircolor and hair care will give you the confidence to put your clients mind at ease.
Are you missing your clients’ signals?
- Body language: arms crossed, not interacting, short answers – they might be nervous! Having a new stylist can be scary especially if you’ve had a bad previous experience. Understanding and responding correctly to their language is important.
How the consultation doesn’t end after 15 minutes – it’s the entire process:
- In the end, if they are not happy it is important to keep your composure and not let it affect your emotions. Knowing and accepting that not everyone will always be happy and that you will make mistakes is the key to growing. Understand your mistakes and learn from them rather than have a poor attitude about the client.
